HIV and AIDS in Africa
The spread of HIV and AIDS is
in South Africa. South Africa’s government addresses this issue by demanding strict policing and prosecution and by eliminating economic inequalities that inhibit HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment and care.
Women in rural regions of South Africa are largely impacted by these viruses. Many, unfortunately, are victims of sexual and gender based violence. Young women with low economic and social status in their community lack control over their own bodies and are
forced into sexual relationships
with men. Women who attempt to limit their probability of obtaining these viruses by remaining faithful to one person are shocked to learn that they are infected with these viruses because of their partner’s infidelity. Furthermore, the women who endure discrimination are
blamed and beaten
because of their HIV status.
Young girls are not given equal access to education. Many are denied the ability to acquire an education because they are often
withdrawn from school
when a family member becomes ill or has died. Education is vital to the citizens of South Africa because it leads to the reduction of disease transmission, and increases economic stability and sustainability.
It is crucial that the government of South Africa intensifies its effort to prevent further violence and transmission of both HIV and AIDS. Although the government enforced the Department of Health’s Five-Year Plan, there are still
5.5 million South Africans who are HIV-infected
55% are women

INFORMATION ON AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide, voluntary movement of people who campaign for
Our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights enshrined in the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
and other international standards. Our mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression and freedom from discrimination, within the context of our work to promote all human rights.
OUR WORK AT MORGAN
Amnesty International meets on Mondays two times a month. Students create flyers and posters to educate the Morgan community about various Amnesty causes. On December 10, students held an all school Global Write a Thon. By educating the Morgan community and collecting signatures, Morgan’s Amnesty International Chapter is able to make a difference in the world.
Amnesty International campaigns get the job done. Since 1961, pressure from letters, faxes and, recently, e-mails has helped free more than 40,000 political prisoners worldwide. Last year Amnesty at Morgan collected signatures on petitions and letters to support Ma Khin Khin Leh, a political prisoner in Myanmar. In 1999 when authorities could not find her husband, who had organized a demonstration, they arrested Ma Khin Khin Leh and her three year old daughter. Ma Khin Khin Leh remained in jail until February 21, 2009.
Last year we collected petitions and letters of support for Troy Davis, a death row inmate in Georgia. Troy was convicted eighteen years ago of the murder of a police officer. There is no physical evidence to link Troy Davis to this crime. On August 17th the Supreme Court issued an order mandating a new evidentiary hearing. Amnesty continues to promote support for Troy Davis.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Every day, people turn to Amnesty International to protect their human rights. And for more than 40 years, AI has been there, opening prison doors, confronting those who torture, rape and kill, and speaking for those whose voices have been silenced.
All meetings are in room 43.
